Four people, ranging in ages from 19 to 25, were arrested in Cleveland for pointing a $500 green laser pointer at two planes and two choppers at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

The laser temporarily blinded at least one of the pilots, and created disorienting patterns while bouncing around between the windows and control panels.

The youths were arrested after flashing the laser at a police chopper, which followed then and pointed their location to ground units.

Snopes.com is a great place to visit for anyone with a reasonable amount of curiosity about strange hoaxes, weird myths and the odd piece of junk science.

This being a weird science blog, the idea isn’t to help spread junk science, but to demonstrate how genuine science can be used to debunk the dubious stuff.

Today’s busted myth is the one about two cell phones being able to pump out enough electromagnetic energy to cook an egg (see photo).

The final verdict?

False!

Not even a bundle of 100 cell phones could even warm a raw egg.

German scientists are working to develop autonomous, robotic firefighters that in the future could put Smokey the Bear out of a job. I’ve never wanted to see a forest fire in person before, but a chance to see these bad boys in action just might make me chance my mind!
The beetle-shaped, six-legged robots go by the name OLE, an acronym for “Offroad Loescheinheit”, which in German means “off-road extinguishing unit”.
They’ll be about Volkswagen Beetle-sized, will be guided and controlled by GPS, and will patrol forests armed with ultra heat-resistant armor, fire-extinguishing agents, tactile feelers like insects’ antennae, and infrared and heat sensors.

If you’re like and me would like to cruise around town astride one of these things, the price tag will be about $125-200K.
