Medical horror show

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Check out this assortment of ghouls and nasties, all working for the benefit of medicine. They’re medical training manikins (not mannequins, which you find in shop windows), and they range from creepy to out-and-out slasher film gory, to kinda SF cool (as in the example above). And while you’re at that site, you can vote [...]

This vaccine will self-destruct in…

Friday, July 11th, 2008

If you have a thing about hypodermic needles and all that injection stuff, you’re going to love this. Researchers have developed a type of salmonella bacteria that, when dripped into the mouths of rodents, can trigger the mouse’s immune system without causing further harm. Why? Because it basically kills itself shortly upon arrival. Hopefully the [...]

Uh, land ahoy, apparently

I think the only thing cooler than seeing this 207-foot cruise ship grounded in practically zero water is seeing how freakishly well-balanced it is. How is that thing not tipping over?! When Gaye Hurst opened the box of an oxygen generator she’d purchased to use for glass blowing, she thought that two of hoses inside the box looked strange. Upon closer inspection, it turned out they weren’t hoses at all but a couple of rat snakes! The company that sold her the oxygen generator, Unlimited Oxygen, [...]

Meteorite damage slideshow

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The Time Magazine website’s just posted up a supercool slideshow about meteorites and the damage they’ve caused on earth. Some pretty awesome pictures there, but the real fascination comes from the strong reminder the photos present that when it comes to cataclysmic meteor strikes on earth, it’s not a question of “if” but “when”. Check [...]

Australian gov’t official off with the wombats

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Australia’s Treasury Secretary, Ken Henry, is due for a break. But his choice of vacation spot has opposition politicians going batty… wom-batty. Henry plans to spend five weeks deep in a Queensland forest, out of cell phone range, caring for a colony of hairy-nosed wombats. Hairy-nosed wombats, unlike common wombats, are an endangered species. The [...]
